Advent calendar 2020: 19. Abisko at -28°C (!)

Advent calendar 2020 - 19: Sweden at -28°C!? Yes, in Abisko

Well yes, Sweden is a northern country after all, it can get really cold. Although not the Siberian kind of cold, because Sweden (and the rest of Europe) benefits from the Atlantic ocean warm stream.

Still… we managed to experience -28°C in the far north of Sweden! Deep in Sámi country (Sápmi, that is). Specifically, in Abisko, a resort village near the Norwegian city of Narvik.

It was in January 2018, there were no trains in or out (trains don’t run if it’s colder than -25°C). Everything is iced over. Still, we had a lot of snow fun. Yay!

(As you can see, Torneträsk in the picture is iced over completely. This is normal in winter though.)
