SAS changes to HKG–CPH from 28 October

航班亦將更改編號為SK965/966。

SAS Scandinavian Airlines announced that, as a new landing/takeoff slot is obtained (assumed to be that of Hong Kong, which means they will able to serve Hong Kong during the afternoon to midnight slot, the slot most used by Hong Kong to Europe flights), the HKG timetable will change from 28 October 2018 onwards, and the route will be changed to CPH–HKG due to the consequent change in operational schedule.

Presently (SK963/964) the flight departs Stockholm Arlanda in the afternoon and reaches Hong Kong in the morning at around 7, leaving Hong Kong at 9-something and landing at Arlanda in the afternoon. This is not so convenient for travellers wishing to travel overnight to save time, or transferring to other European flights. Unfortunately at the extra-busy Hong Kong airport (SAS returned to HKG in 2015, having long ago ditched its CPH–HKG Kai Tak direct flight rumoured to be due to discontent over the new airport’s high fees in 1998), it’s not easy to get a good slot and the timetable has been maintained for three years.

As for Stockholm, the HKG flight is the only SAS Far East flight that departs there (Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo routes all depart from Copenhagen). After the HKG flight arrives at ARN, the aircraft serves a United States return and then serves HKG again from Arlanda. The change of schedule means this operational arrangement will no longer hold and thus the route is changed to Copenhagen where most SAS long-haul flights are based.

The flights will change numbers to SK965/966. Still maintaining five flights per week, the flight departs Copenhagen in the evening, reaching Hong Kong in the afternoon, departing Hong Kong after midnight and arriving Copenhagen in the morning. This means convenience for onward connection to elsewhere in Europe, and also train and road connection to the rest of Denmark and southern Sweden, but SAS will face direct competition from Cathay Pacific (summer three flights per week HKG–CPH). Flying between Hong Kong and northern Sweden will also become very inconvenient.

SAS had earlier suspended sales of the direct flight to HKG after October, but has now resumed and updated to SK965/966. All passengers with ticket of SK963/964 after 28 October will be automatically rebooked to SK965/966 and rerouted to CPH.

New schedule from 28 October (winter time):

SK965 Wed to Sun CPH 20:55–14:45+1 HKG
SK966 Tue, Fri to Sun HKG 01:20–06:20 CPH / Mon HKG 01:35–06:35
